HAWTHORN FORMULA INGREDIENTS: Shan Zha, Fructus Crataegi Gan Cao, Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis Alcohol Water PRESENTATION: Tincture: 10cc/ampoule, 10 ampoules/box. DIRECTIONS: Take 1 ampoule 2 times a day for at least 4 weeks. LABORATORY TESTS: 1. Decrease of blood lipids: In rabbits, Hawthorn Seeds formula significantly reduced blood cholesterol and triglycerides using 9.5 gm/day over control group. Arteriosclerotic changes and atheromatous formations on aortic wall were also less severe in control group. 2. Strengthening the heart: Infusion of Hawthorn Seeds formula in extracorporeal heart of frog increased the amplitude and duration of cardiac contraction. Infusion also brought back heart beat in a heart weakened by a 10% chloral hydrate. 3. Dilation of blood vessels: 2-3mg/kg of Hawthorn Seeds formula injected intravenously to a dog resulted in a marked increase of coronary blood flow volume lasting more that 37 minutes. Also, oxygen consumption of cardiac muscle and peripheral vascular resistance were decreased. The blood flow volume to kidneys and skeletal muscles was increased. 4. Inhibition of platelet agglutination: This formula has marked inhibitory effect on platelet agglutination and is able to prevent occurrence of thrombosis. 5. Reduction of blood pressure: Injected in cats at 10 mg/kg intravenously, the formula had a slow and persistent effect in reducing blood pressure. Reduction of blood pressure by 40% was obtained through dilation of peripheral arteries. CLLINICAL OBSERVATIONS: 1. Decrease in blood lipids: After taking 50gm/day continuously for 40 days, blood cholesterol and other lipids were reduced to normal in 77 patients out of 93 patients with cholesteremia (83%). In 59 patients, the average amount of B-lipoprotein in the blood was 473 mg/dl before treatment and decreased to 362 mg/dl after the 40-day treatment (24% reduction). 2. Hypertension: 50 patients diagnosed as stage II hypertension were treated with the formula orally every day for 5 weeks. In 35 cases, 70%, the blood pressure became normal. The remaining cases showed various degrees of reduction in blood pressure. TOXICITY: Hawthorn Seeds Formula has very low toxicity. No negative reactions were found even after long consumption. Continual oral consumption by mice and rats found no abnormal findings in blood examinations and in other physiological tests. The LD50 of rat is 33.8 ml/kg. CAUTIONS: None. Safe for long-term use.
